VA. Civil War Trails
We are an
organization of men and women veterans who honorably served
America in time of war. We are dedicated to self-help, service
to the sick and disabled, the widows and orphans of our fellow veterans.
We are also involved in our communities. We are by far the largest
veterans’ organization with over 3,000,000 members in the United
States and 28 foreign countries. Post 180 was founded in 1930 by WW1
veterans who saw need for the organization in Vienna. One of
15,000 Posts in this 3 million member organization, the Post is named
for two local service members killed in combat in WW1. The Post
Home is located on the 1745 Northern Neck land grant to John Jenkins
and it was later sold to William Fairfax. During the Civil War,
the land was owned by the Gunnells. Subsequent owners were the
Keith and McClandish families who deeded the property to Post 180
in 1956.

Support to the Community
Post 180 has a strong commitment to community events and organizations. A significant portion of income is donated to veteran-focused and community programs. Some of these include:
-
VA Veteran’s Care Center
-
VA Medical Center, Washington, DC
-
Local Boys Scout Troops
-
Vienna Town Beautification Brick Project
-
Vienna Volunteer Fire Department
-
Hospice of Northern Virginia
-
Patrick Henry Boys & Girl Plantation
-
Town of VA Parks & Recreation
Post 180 places the American flags throughout the town of Vienna for memorial holidays. The Post also conducts the local memorial programs for Veteran's Day and Memorial Day. At this year's Veteran's Day program, Vienna Councilman and past Post 180 Commander, Dan Dellinger (picture below), gave the keynote address.

Children and Youth
The “future generation” is very important and the focus of much attention. We contribute to safety and drug prevention programs, the Vienna Teen Center and the Spinoza Bear program for sick children. We host a Children’s Holiday Party annually in December and sponsor the Junior Law Cadet program, Cub Scout Pack 1139 and Boy Scout Troop 1539. The Boy Scout Troop meets at Post 180 every Tuesday at 7:30pm. We also award three cash scholarships each year to full-time college or graduate school students.
Each year, our Post conducts the local competition of the American Legion's National High School Oratorical Contest. First prize at the national level is $18,000. While we strongly encourage participation from the schools in the Vienna area, we do not restrict the students from participating who happen to be enrolled in schools in other geographical locations.
Service to our Veterans
As veterans, we are very aware of comrades in need. We are always ready to aid veterans and their families, and ensure that they receive all benefits to which they are entitled. When the final call comes, we offer bereavement services. Life insurance, vision services and discounts for a wide variety of travel-related needs are available. If you have questions about veteran's benefits or problems with veteran's issues/concerns, please contact our Service Officer ¨C Joyce Miller at: 703-938-9535.

10,000
Golf Balls to our Active Duty Solders
(Thank you Letter for Donation)
UNIT: 1-9 CAV
WHAT: Golf Driving Range
WHEN: 27 Feb 2009
WHERE: FOB Hunter
SUMMARY:
The MWR facilities at FOB Hunter were supplemented with the addition
of a new golf driving range. The balls (donated by American Legion
Post 180) and clubs (donated by Golf Park at Hunter Mill) were all
coordinated by Mr. David Minyard--an acquaintance of the 10th Mountain
Division Commander Major General Oates. When asked who to donate 10,000
golf balls and numerous clubs to, MG Oates recommended 1-9 CAV. These
resources were also distributed to each of the three other outposts
in the Headhunter Area of Operations: JSS Apache, JSS Chilat, and
JSS Amara. 1SG Holland, HHT 1SG, created the range at FOB Hunter and
has already provided a few golf lessons. In its first 10 minutes of
use, the 1SG and driving range accomplished a feat that 10 years of
other locations/instructors were unable to do-correcting the Squadron
XO's slice so that his shot actually went straight! The range will
continue to be a welcome source of leisure for the Headhunters in
Maysan Province.
